Blackheath Legend vs Putney

23rd Sept 2007

Blackheath Legends had a tough match to kick off the season. Putney - a strong Premier league side who competed for the top spot last year, they were going to be difficult to beat but that didn't dampen our spirits. Our first blow was a phone call from Ro who didn't get the message that the game venue was changed and consequently turned up at the wrong place... With a lack of subs and attacks, Blackheath conceded 5 goals or so in the first half. But our defence soon geared up and Em was saving goals coming from all directions as the defensive unit pushed them out further and further.

Putney provided a slick combination of speed and good midfield passing along with some well worked attacking moves, plenty of picks and some great cuts to provide the space. Fielding a large proportion of national players, they maintained possession well and despite plenty of turnover ball some tired defensive legs had to then work hard to get the ball out into the attacks for Legends. A couple of shocking tackles (no names mentioned) when sticks actually touched some flesh meant we were one down for some 4 minutes and Putney capitalised on this with the extra player.

However, in the second half we settled, and despite no 'goals-in-back-of-net' moments there were plenty of shots on goal and playing possession around the goal/attack area. The defence won a number of turnovers and comments were made about their functioning well as a unit - they certainly did well to keep the Putney attacks out as much as they did.

In summary - Ro we missed you! - great goal from Al and efforts from Em in goal (who was subsequently awarded MVP). Welcome also to Tess and Kelly who were new in our midst and helped sure up the midfield.
